Fiona MacTaggart served as a Labour MP for 20 years before becoming chair of the Fawcett Society in 2018. Prior to being elected, MacTaggart was a primary school teacher.
MacTaggart is the 4th generation of the MacTaggart house-building dynasty. Her millionaire father, the 3rd Baronet Ian MacTaggart, was a Tory parliamentary candidate and chairman of the now obscure Society For Individual Freedom. SIF is a libertarian and conservative organisation with alleged links to the British Intelligence community that ran many political campaigns to limit state involvement in citizens lives, including one opposing the compulsory use of seatbelts. Fiona MacTaggart inherited at least £1 million from her father.Her great-grandfather was a treasurer for the newly formed Labour Party of Keir Hardie, whilst another grandfather was a conservative MP.
According to the Electoral Commission, Fiona MacTaggart has donated £116,985 to Labour individuals and groups since 2004. Other beneficiaries include Ian Murray, Jess Philips and Liz Kendall.
