The Matrix Project is an effort to document personal factors that undermine powerful journalists’ claims of objectivity and impartiality. Are factors such as an elite education, establishment connections, personal wealth and interests in rival fields compatible with journalistic integrity?

This page looks at former Times Radio now TalkTV presenter Tom Newton Dunn. For more information on the database click here.

Tom Newton Dunn authored the above piece while political editor of the Sun.

Before the end of the day it was published, the story, targetting Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour, had been removed from the Sun’s website – without acknowledgement or explanation from Newton Dunn or the paper.

Newton Dunn and the Sun drew a great deal of criticism for the piece. “What is particularly worrying about the Sun’s publication of a toxic conspiracy theory,” wrote Daniel Trilling in the Guardian, “is that the story was written by its political editor – a veteran journalist with years of experience as a defence correspondent who appears frequently on the BBC. It’s not good enough for the Sun to simply remove it – the paper needs to apologise, and to explain what it got wrong and why.”

Tom Newton Dunn is the son of an MEP closely associated with John Major, was educated at one of the most expensive private schools in Britain, is married to a wealthy entrepreneur and published a hit job on Jeremy Corbyn which relied on neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic sources.
